History

The region
was discovered in 1542, by the expedition of the spaniard Alvar
Nunez . He is recognized as the discoverer of Iguazu waterfalls.
"Caingangues"
indians were the first inhabitants of this region. In 1881 the
first settlers arrived.
The Iguassu
national park was created in 1939 by a presidential decree. In
1986 iot received the title of Patrimony of humand kind from UNESCO.
In 1965 happened
the inauguration of the friendship bridge between Brazil and Paraguay.
In 1985 was the year of the inauguration of the fraternity bridge
between Argentina and Brazil.
The construction
of Itaipu hydroelectric power station caused a strong impact on
the region leading to a sudden increase in population from 30000
in 1960 to 270000 today.
